2026 is the last year of major Android updates for the Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE and S9 FE+. All five get One UI 9, based on Android 17, and then they are done with feature releases.
The S9 series arrived in 2023 on One UI 5.1, which was Android 13, with Samsung promising four generations of OS updates and five years of security patches. It has delivered exactly that. Security updates should keep coming until some point in 2028.
The older and cheaper ones are further along
The Galaxy Tab S8, S8+ and S8 Ultra, released in February 2022, already took their final major upgrade with One UI 8 on Android 16. Security patches run until February 2027.
The Galaxy Tab A9 and A9+ are the awkward case. They launched in October 2023, months after the S9, and Android 16 is already their last major update, most likely because they were budget devices sold under the older support commitment. They get roughly another year of security fixes.
Why it matters
- The dividing line is the policy, not the hardware. Samsung's seven-year commitment started with the Galaxy Tab S10 series in 2024 and now covers the S11, S12, and even the budget Tab A11 and A11+, which are promised seven years of OS and security updates. A tablet bought in 2023 and one bought in 2025 are on completely different clocks.
- Budget buyers get the worst of it. The A9 was the cheapest way into a current Samsung tablet, and it is now the furthest from support, having used up its major updates in under three years.
- Enterprise has its own rules. The rugged Galaxy Tab Active5, launched 2024, has four years of OS updates and five of security. Since it shipped on Android 14, it should reach Android 18, with patches into 2029.
- None of this is a surprise or a scandal. It is the ordinary consequence of a manufacturer improving its policy without retroactively applying it, which is worth remembering when the seven-year promise is used as a selling point on a cheap device.
Rollouts vary by model and region, so a Tab that has not shown One UI 9 yet is not necessarily abandoned. Updates live under Settings, then Software update, then Download and install.
