Tesla showed a SpaceX-powered Roadster that flies

Tesla revealed a Roadster that uses SpaceX hardware and, according to TechCrunch's framing, flies and falls with style.

The Roadster has been promised for years, and the original pitch included cold-gas thrusters as an optional package. A flying car is a striking demonstration and a difficult product: the regulatory path, the energy cost and the safety case for a vehicle that leaves the ground are all separate problems from making one that drives well.

Why it matters

  • A demonstration is not a product. What matters is whether any of this reaches something you can buy.
  • Cold-gas thrusters on a road car raise questions that a spec sheet does not answer, starting with what happens when the system fails while the car is moving.
  • Tesla has a long history of showing vehicles well before shipping them. Treat the reveal as a reveal.
